Blue. Sparkling, radiant blue. Soft, soothing blue. Municipal blue and royal blue. Blue can be many things. Red is just as diverse. And let’s not forget yellow. And green. And everything in between. But simply talking about colours evokes images—images of places, times, and events. We don’t remember in black and white. We remember in colours. We can recall the colour of our first bike, the colour of Grandma’s door, and the colour of a rug at some eccentric relatives’ house.

Colours are the engine of memory. But they’re also the engine of creativity. From classical painters to graffiti artists, colours are used to express ideas. Just like the architect, the designer, and the person who’s always dreamed of a pink wall.

No one has a monopoly on expressing themselves with colours, but some do it more professionally than others. Because painting isn’t just about slapping on some coloured liquid and hoping the imperfections go unnoticed. Painting is surface treatment, not superficial treatment. And the surface reflects the foundation. If it isn’t sanded, filled, and primed, it shows all the way through. But if the foundation is right, the paint can create depth, gloss, and texture, allowing the colour to play its role as the mood-setter and light-bringer.
